Update by Dr Caroline Tagg, BAAL Language and New Media SIG Convenor
July 2020
Activities
Since lockdown, we've moved our activities online. Sadly, we had to cancel the SIG seminar in Edinburgh in April organised by our Events Organiser, Sumin Zhao (complete with wine and a Harry Potter tour). However, we were able to move at least part of it online. One of our plenary speakers, Jack Grieve, gave a very well attended talk online and in fact spearheaded a new online series, which has so far featured talks by Jannis Androutsopoulos and Michele Zappavigna. You will have received an email about our next speaker, Susan Herring, on 30th July. The talks have been of very high quality and attendance has been great. Our thanks to Sumin Zhao for organising and hosting these talks!
Meanwhile, we're also contributing to the BAAL 2020 online conference on 4th September. Our very own Jai Mackenzie will be giving a plenary talk on Parenting with connection: Sharing life lessons in single mothers’ digital mediaon behalf of the SIG and alongside other BAAL SIG speakers. Registration opened today and the conference is open to all BAAL members. Do come along!
Elections
In consultation with the committee and due to the Covid-19 pandemic and restrictions, I decided to continue as SIGconvenor for another year and step down in September 2021. We're therefore looking for a new convenor to take over then. If you're interested in playing a more active role in the SIG or have interesting ideas for future directions or activities, please consider standing. Feel free to get in touch with me or with anyone on the committee - Korina, Sumin and Jai, copied into this email - if you have any questions or would like to discuss this further. And please look out for the online elections next year!
AGM
We've also decided to hold our SIG annual meeting online on Friday 18th September at 11am probably on Microsoft Teams. Hopefully by then we can not only look back over the last year's activities but also look forward to some potentially face-to-face events next year.
My thanks to Sumin, Jai and Korina for their invaluable work on the committee. All the best to you all and have a lovely (safe) summer.
